Skee Week Fall 2014
Pretty with a Purpose: Double 08
Monday: From the Mind, with Love
With 100+ people in attendance, speakers from the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), Dee Humble & Kyle Lloyd, spoke about the process of dealing with mental illnesses. From their "dark hours" to their recovery stage, our audience was able to listen and ask questions to the speakers.
This day (specifically for ladies only) we had a theme of "girls talk" where we there were over 80 girls in attendance. Here, we had a short presentation with clips played from various shows like "Bad Girls Club" and "Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta" where our panel of Beta Phi current and Alumni discuss how these shows affect black women as a whole. The audience were also allowed to voice their opinion and ask questions to our panel. Goodies were also given to the girls where they were given a blank parchment to write anonymous questions for the panel to discuss.
For our Wednesday's event, we decided to lighten up the mood and have a little fun. With over 80 people in attendance and 8 teams that played, we enjoyed some good old-fashioned Thunderball (kickball). Each team played another team for 8 minutes until we had an overall winner, who was Team #4. We also had every team and person attending donate bottles of water to give to our local food bank, Great Harvest Food Bank.
For our Thursday's WOE, Beta Phi cracked down and focused on school. Bringing everyone together in the library, we brought a speaker from the Learning Center to talk about free tutoring, extra help in classes, and more. We provided food, drinks, and conversed about shared majors and minors as well.
As our Week of Events reached an end, Beta Phi wanted to do a community service like no other done before. Partnered with Habitat for Humanity, volunteers helped families break the cycle of poverty by constructing an affordable no-profit house in Muncie community. Sorors drove back to Ball State every hour to pick up more volunteers where we nailed, cut, and chopped pieces of wood to put on the outside of the house. Volunteers overall had a great time with us and Habitat for Humanity was extremely thankful for the service we provided them that day.
